Established in 1935, The Pewter Shop is the oldest gift shop in Rockport, MA. We have been offering high quality pewter from our own workshop, here on Bearskin Neck, and from other pewterers in all parts of the world. The Pewter Shop was established by Lewis Whitney and his wife Blanche. Surrounded by the vibrant scene populated by fishermen, boat builders, artists, and other artisans, the Whitney’s found inspiration to pursue their craft. It wasn’t long before there were upwards of seven craftsmen at work hand- hammering plates, bowls, and other items in the workshop. This history of making pewter on the premises has continued without interruption for the past 83 years. The current owners, the Murch family, were first involved in 1938 when Lawson, at the age of twelve, went to work for the Whitney’s. In 1960, ownership passed from the Whitney’s to Lawson and Herdis. The tradition continues with son Chris, who has been active in the business since 1970, assuming ownership in 2005, and his daughter Zan, who has worked in the shop for the past 19 years.
