The Pancake Man was founded in the summer of 1961. The South Yarmouth restaurant was the brainchild of three local men on a ski trip to New Hampshire during the winter of 1960. In those simpler days, the drew up plans, began construction and opened for the following summer. The result was an immediate success. The following year two additional Pancake Man restaurants were constructed in Hyannis and Falmouth. The Hyannis location was on Route 132 in Hyannis which at that time was almost rural. The malling of the road had not yet begun. The site of the current Cape Cod Mall was occupied by a miniature golf course. The Hyannis location operated until mid 80’s until it was sold and became a restaurant lounge. The building, formerly housing the Pancake Man has been demolished and replaced with a new retail sales building. The Falmouth location was located on the road to the local beach. An additional buyer was brought in who moved the restaurant to Route 28. The restaurant operated for many years and is now a 99 Restaurant. The Dennisport location was built in late 60’s by several of the Pancake Man principals and operated for many years and is still an operating restaurant. The Sandwich location was built in the Angelo’s shopping center in Sandwich. The location is now a Bobby Byrnes Pub. The South Yarmouth location is the sole surviving restaurant of a chain which had the logo of “The only Man in five places at the same time on Cape Cod”
